All Men Are Created Equal Tour at Carnton—educational history tour.
This 90-minute guided tour at Carnton takes families through the house and grounds while exploring America's founding ideals and the deepening divisions that led to the Civil War. You'll trace how the nation's understanding of equality shifted over decades, with a particular focus on the role of slavery in pulling the country apart. It's a meaningful way to help young people understand the historical forces that shaped this pivotal moment.
Tours run at 9 a.m., Monday through Saturday, with tickets at $29 per person. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early. This tour offering is unique to Tennessee and is only available at Carnton. Ticket proceeds support the new Carter House visitor center and museum, opening in 2026, which will feature exhibits on this same theme. You can purchase tickets online in advance.
