Botanical Drawing: Mixed Media Explorations
Botanical Drawing: Mixed Media Explorations in Richmond
Spend three Fridays in December exploring color and light through botanical subjects at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. This intensive studio class guides you beyond basic observation into deeper work with graphite, watercolor, and colored pencil. You'll learn how hue and value interact, and practice the kind of sustained attention that reveals details everyday looking misses. The class moves between indoor studio work and outdoor sessions (weather permitting), so you'll study actual specimens and experience the unique quality of early December light firsthand.
This class works best if you already have solid experience with colored pencil or continuous-tone shading techniques—or if you've completed specific prerequisite courses. Expect a relaxed, experimental environment where you develop your own artistic voice while connecting more deeply with the natural world. The instructor provides live plants and shared materials; you'll bring your own supplies from the provided list. Registration is required. Member price is $231; non-member price is $284. If you need any accommodations to participate, contact the Garden directly.
