Botany for Botanical Illustration

Botany for Botanical Illustration

Botany for Botanical Illustration in Richmond

This four-session course combines hands-on plant study with artistic practice, making it ideal for anyone serious about botanical illustration. You'll spend your mornings learning about plant structure and anatomy directly from John Hayden, a biology professor who specializes in plant science. Afternoons shift to the drawing table, where instructor Sheila Hayden guides you through creating detailed graphite illustrations of actual plant specimens. Throughout the program, you'll develop a portfolio of your work while building your understanding of scientific naming conventions used in botanical art. The course runs over four Saturdays and requires that you've already completed either Introduction to Botanical Drawing III or Intermediate Drawing for Botanical Illustration. You'll need to bring your own supplies—the Garden provides only the plant specimens. Registration costs $239 for Garden members and $298 for non-members. If you need accessibility accommodations to participate, reach out to the Garden ahead of time at the contact information on our site. Pre-registration through the Garden's website is required to hold your spot.
