Building Healthy Soil in Richmond

Your garden's soil is far more than just dirt—it's a living ecosystem that, when healthy, supports thriving plants and contributes to your success as a gardener. In this hands-on class, instructor Karin Stretchko, an agriculture specialist with expertise in soil science, will walk you through the fundamentals of building and maintaining nutrient-rich soil. You'll learn practical techniques for analyzing your own soil and discover amendment strategies, drainage solutions, and other methods to boost soil health right in your backyard. The morning includes both classroom instruction and a guided tour of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's grounds, where you'll see firsthand how the garden's horticulturists actively work to restore and maintain their soil for long-term plant vitality. Registration is required, and the cost is $42 for members and $53 for non-members. If you need accommodations to fully participate, the garden welcomes requests—just reach out to them in advance to arrange support.
