Butterfly Pinning 103: Owl Butterfly

In this hands-on workshop, you'll discover the careful technique of butterfly specimen preparation while learning about one of nature's most fascinating insects. Led by Clara Aus, a lepidopterist and the Butterfly Exhibit Manager, you'll explore the owl butterfly's remarkable features—including its distinctive eye-spot markings that mimic owl eyes—along with insights into its life cycle, anatomy, and nighttime activity patterns. The session begins with educational content before moving into a guided pinning demonstration. During the practical portion, Clara will walk you through each step of the preservation process, from rehydrating specimens to properly positioning and pinning the wings. All butterflies used in this workshop completed their natural life cycle in the Butterflies Bloom exhibit, making this a respectful way to honor these insects while learning a lasting skill. You'll leave with a complete shadowbox kit and the tools needed to continue pinning on your own. Materials are included in the registration fee. Members pay $53 and non-members $64.
