Cracking Geodes

Break open geodes to discover crystals inside—fun geology STEM activity.

Your child will get hands-on with real geology during this interactive STEM session designed for kids ages 7 and up. Participants will learn about how geodes and crystals form, then get to crack open actual rocks to discover the sparkling crystals hidden inside. It's a great way to combine science learning with the excitement of a real discovery—perfect for young learners who love exploring nature and getting creative. This program is geared toward elementary-aged children, particularly those in grades 3–5, though younger or older kids within the target age range are welcome too. It's a short, focused activity that works well for families looking for an engaging after-school outing. Note that registration for this session has already closed, so be sure to check back for future dates or similar geology programs in the Henrico library system.
