Travel with Maymont to Mexico

Witness one of nature's most remarkable events—the annual monarch butterfly migration to Mexico's high mountain forests. This week-long journey takes families to multiple reserves in Michoacán where hundreds of millions of monarchs gather for winter. You'll hike or ride horseback through fir-covered mountains to see the butterflies in their natural habitat, watching them cluster on trees, drink from streams, and fill the sky in flight. Along the way, visit the Macho de Agua Monarch Reserve and learn about the Mazahua Indigenous community's culture and connection to the butterflies. The trip also includes time exploring the historic pyramids at Teotihuacán and the charming colonial town of Angangueo. This seven-day adventure runs February 24–March 2, 2027, and costs from $3,225 per person. The activity level is rated moderate to strenuous, making it suitable for families comfortable with hiking at high altitudes.
